Ikebana

One class I had during the second half of my semester was Ikebana, Japanese Flower Arranging. It is an art form like painting or sculpting, but involve arranging flowers in a display to look nice and yet look natural. There are simple principle to follow: Space is important, too much clutter is bad, having an empty spot can actually accentuate the rest of the piece; Flowers should project outward, toward the viewer, having everything sticking straight up looks strange; You should aspire to make it look natural; use the pieces to help bring out the features of others, things should not blend.
This class was fun because we got to get right into it and it was over when we finished. Below are pictures from my various projects, I can see my own improvement as I progress, but here they are for your enjoyment.

Also, I have no idea what this plant is called, but they grow on the hillside where I live and I like the way they look:
And as long as we are on the subject of pretty things in bright colors here is a pink construction crane, oddly this is not uncommon in Japan...
